Can you guess where Pip and Domo are? I know...it looks a lot like they're on Mars, but I assure you, they're still on the planet Earth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-50R4pRHVmnY/VmsCrbTfEiI/AAAAAAAAIgw/qGk_8MUt7UY/s1600/P1050779.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-50R4pRHVmnY/VmsCrbTfEiI/AAAAAAAAIgw/qGk_8MUt7UY/s640/P1050779.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The blue sky is reassuring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But it does look rather desolate and cold.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you look carefully, you can find some tasty morsels, but there's not much here. Here's another hint: they're in North America.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Nope, not Utah...<br />
<br />
Pipkin and Domo are visiting a land formation known as <i>badlands</i> - dry terrain of soft rock and soil that has been exposed by erosion. This is the Cheltenham Badlands, located along the Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, in southern Ontario, Canada. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--c2XbYYXy_s/VmsBqnZlHcI/AAAAAAAAIgc/QrrQEQGAjS8/s1600/P1050787.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--c2XbYYXy_s/VmsBqnZlHcI/AAAAAAAAIgc/QrrQEQGAjS8/s640/P1050787.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The Cheltenham Badlands is an example of what poor farming habits can do to otherwise arable land. In the background of the photo above, you can see where the top of the hill of this former farmland is experiencing some secondary growth, but it's unlikely that the badlands will experience any regrowth.<br />
<br />
Today, it is an other-worldly playground for the imaginative! Domo is channeling his inner <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Martian-Andy-Weir/dp/0553418025/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8" target="_blank">Mark Watney</a>. HELLO EARTH! I'M GONNA SCIENCE THE $#!T OUTTA THIS PLACE!<br />

Pipkin's favorite activity in Chicago, paws down, was the afternoon he spent hopping around the Back of the Yards, a neighborhood near the Union Stock Yards, which employed European immigrants in the 1900s. Pipkin was interested in looking for artist Indira Freitas Johnson's installation <a href="http://www.indirajohnson.com/ten-thousand-ripples.html" target="_blank"><i>Ten Thousand Ripples</i></a>. The project involved the installation of 100 fibreglass Buddha sculptures around the city of Chicago, with the purpose of impacting public spaces in a positive way. Of the hundred sculptures, only a few are scattered throughout the Back of the Yards, so Pipkin wandered around looking for them. Here are some of his photos of the neighborhood.<br />

In his search for Buddhas, Pipkin also came across several neighborhood cats. They told him there was one more to be found along a busy street. Pipkin found it, outside of a bank on West 47th St.<br />

But it didn't tarnish his day in the Back of the Yards. This was a
neighborhood with a vibrant community feel. Pipkin felt a sense of peace
and contemplation while visiting the Buddha statues. He carried that
feeling with him as he rode the L back into downtown Chicago.<br />

And now, some old, fuzzy photos of Pipkin at the Queens of the Stone Age concert at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/aragonchicago/" target="_blank">Aragon Ballroom</a>, back in May, 2014. <br />

Aragon Ballroom is a beautiful venue with a large stage and main floor, and a large balcony to provide shorties like Pipkin with a great view and less of a chance of being trampled at a lively show such as QOTSA. <br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--vLhIPw03fs/VkjN_GcjXMI/AAAAAAAAIcE/n0Jod9KfTN0/s1600/P1040442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--vLhIPw03fs/VkjN_GcjXMI/AAAAAAAAIcE/n0Jod9KfTN0/s640/P1040442.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Domo's always telling Pipkin, "Go big, or go home". After all the supersized chocolate at Chicago's <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2015/11/oversize-overload-hersheys-chocolate.html" target="_blank">Hershey's Chocolate World</a>, Domo was on a roll. How do you top half pound Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? Apparently, with pounds and pounds of cheese, baked into a classic Chicago deep dish style pizza from <a href="https://giordanos.com/" target="_blank">Giordano's</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IIS8lnH-LMg/VkjN8H-_5uI/AAAAAAAAIcA/5kT1kleYP4k/s1600/P1040443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IIS8lnH-LMg/VkjN8H-_5uI/AAAAAAAAIcA/5kT1kleYP4k/s400/P1040443.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you're going to have deep dish pizza, you will need patience. It takes about an hour for these pies to come out of the oven, and they smell soooooo good. But deep dish is...a bit much, even for appetites and mouths as big as Domo's. It's basically like eating a brick of melted cheese. Which is fine, if that's your thing. Domo thought it was his thing. But there was no way he was going to get through this pizza. It's just too much. But when in Chicago...om nom nom nom nom. You kind of have to do it, once.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-COVIyhm3I_4/VkjOAe0g7-I/AAAAAAAAIcQ/VjosWqvcOvs/s1600/P1050032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-COVIyhm3I_4/VkjOAe0g7-I/AAAAAAAAIcQ/VjosWqvcOvs/s640/P1050032.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When it comes to the great Chicago vs. New York pizza debate, Pipkin definitely prefers New York pizza! The thin crust and tangy sauce...oh yes. There's just nothing like a simple slice of cheese pizza, and it doesn't take an hour to come out of the oven! Pip enjoyed this slice at <a href="http://www.joespizzanyc.com/" target="_blank">Joe's Pizza</a> in Greenwich Village, a month after his trip to Chicago. More posts from NYC to come, but first, we'll wrap up his visit to Chicago.<br />
<br />
Which city's pizza do you prefer? Chicago or New York? As for Domo's, "Go big, or go home" statement...Domo ended up going home with a bit of a brick-of-cheese belly ache. yearofthelabbithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10293753007163650394noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7990007883560569829.post-38181491417561290902015-11-15T12:50:00.002-05:002015-11-15T14:37:04.319-05:00Oversize Overload! You can't miss the aroma of pure sugar next door to the <a href="http://www.luc.edu/luma/" target="_blank">Loyola University Museum of Art</a>. After Pipkin and Domo checked out the <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2014/06/g-is-for-gorey-c-is-for-chicago.html" target="_blank">Edward Gorey exhibit</a>, they followed the sweet scent of diabetic coma at Chicago's <a href="http://hersheyschocolateworldchicago.com/" target="_blank">Hershey's Chocolate World</a>.<br />

Everything is oversized at Herhey's Chocolate World. 1 lb packages of peanut butter cups! That's a half pound of peanutty chocolate each! Domo's tempted to pick up a 3 lb jug of chocolate syrup just to bathe in.<br />

You'll also find the world's largest Hershey's milk chocolate bar (5 lbs!) and the world's largest Hershey's kiss. This place is insanity! Pip and Domo spent a rainy morning at The Shedd Aquarium. The place was full of screaming children and babies, but they found a quiet area where they could watch the belugas swimming. It seemed peaceful, and Pipkin felt a small pang of envy, but watching the belugas for some time, it was clear they were bored with living in a tank. Domo too, knew the look on the belugas' faces. It was the same look Pipkin had when he was living a <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2011/03/this-is-not-toy.html" target="_blank">Shelf Life</a> in Port Townsend, WA. Thank goodness Domo freed him from Shelf Life and showed him the world. <3<br />

Pipkin's hope for a grassy spot to nap was a bust, but continuing his hop south in Millennium Park he came across Crown Fountain, which, in his opinion, is the best fountain ever!<br />
<br />
Two 50 foot (15 m) tall glass brick towers oppose one another across a shallow granite pool. Images of Chicago residents are displayed on LED screens while water pours over the structure. After a few moments, the faces begin spitting out a stream of water!<br />
<br />
Pipkin loves art that is accessible, that fits in with its surroundings and is interactive and fun, and he enjoyed seeing diversity in the faces of Chicago. This place isn't just great on a hot summer day for splashing around, but it's a lot of fun for people watching! Tourists will walk by and stand in front of the towers to take photos, unaware that they are about to get a soaking. It's fun to people watch and watch the people watching other people. <br />

Most fountains you can't even splash around in. The fountain is surrounded by benches for tired parents to sit on while their kids run around burning off some energy. Juame Plensa did a fantastic job designing this fountain, and the city park provided a wonderful place for people to enjoy Chicago. Well done!<br />
<br />
Crown Fountain is located in Millennium Park between Cloud Gate and the Art Institute of Chicago. The fountain runs, weather permitting, from May to October.yearofthelabbithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10293753007163650394noreply@blogger.com2Millennium Park, Chicago, IL, USA41.8827024 -87.61939380000001241.8767914 -87.629478800000015 41.8886134 -87.609308800000008tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7990007883560569829.post-84013093122654029052014-07-09T11:05:00.000-04:002014-07-09T11:05:02.726-04:00The Great Lawn at Millennium Park<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After braving the crowds <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2014/07/labbits-like-beans-cloud-gate-at.html" target="_blank">visiting Cloud Gate</a>, Pipkin wanted a chance to nap (and maybe snack) on the grass at the Great Lawn in front of the Frank Gehry designed Pritzker Pavilion. There were no musical events scheduled at the bandshell, so Pip assumed he'd have no trouble finding a spot on the lawn. He was right, unfortunately. The disappointment inspired the above haiku by Domo. </div>

Wandering around the south end of Chicago's Grant Park, Domo came upon a large group of armless, headless sculptures, seemingly caught suspended in a moment of walking meditation. There was something about these sculptures that made Domo feel incredibly warm, welcome, and included.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<i>Agora</i> is the name of this collection of sculptures by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz, and it is Greek for "gathering place" or "assembly". All 106 sculptures are 9 feet (2.7 m) tall and were made from a seamless piece of iron.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Vku5OK50q8/U7rmtB9KVNI/AAAAAAAAHjY/ZSh0j7xN_6k/s1600/agorafeet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Vku5OK50q8/U7rmtB9KVNI/AAAAAAAAHjY/ZSh0j7xN_6k/s1600/agorafeet.jpg" height="380" width="640" /></a></div>

Pipkin isn't very fond of crowds (and neither is the artist, whose fear of crowds is thematic in her work) and he has a fear of being trampled underfoot, but he braved walking amongst these stoic figures. He loved their rusted, bark like texture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FhsWfFwzJuA/U7rmjXoP3gI/AAAAAAAAHi8/LYvDPDYGaFQ/s1600/domobackagora.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FhsWfFwzJuA/U7rmjXoP3gI/AAAAAAAAHi8/LYvDPDYGaFQ/s1600/domobackagora.jpg" height="400" width="640" /></a></div>
Domo, who has often felt a little like an outsider (people don't "get" what he is. Brown, boxy, lock-jawed. He's been teased about being an ice cream sandwich - like that's a bad thing to be?) but walking amongst these sculptures he really felt like he belonged in this gathering place. That's the interesting thing about art. Everyone interprets it in different ways, depending on who they are and what they see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8P5d7_UNTic/U7rmt5O0P1I/AAAAAAAAHjk/OyAM7dlnpC0/s1600/labbitagora2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8P5d7_UNTic/U7rmt5O0P1I/AAAAAAAAHjk/OyAM7dlnpC0/s1600/labbitagora2.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
Domo may have enjoyed being in the thick of the crowd but Pipkin appreciated seeing the mass from a little ways away.<br />
<br />
However you may enjoy viewing these sculptures, you'll find them at the south end of Grant Park, at Michigan Ave and East Roosevelt Rd.yearofthelabbithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10293753007163650394noreply@blogger.com2Grant Park, Chicago, IL, USA41.8741516 -87.62080609999998241.8505046 -87.661146599999981 41.897798599999994 -87.580465599999982tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7990007883560569829.post-76133204381942621552014-07-05T12:29:00.002-04:002014-07-05T13:20:30.920-04:00Labbits Like Beans: Cloud Gate at Millennium Park<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Partly cloudy days are perfect for visiting and photographing Anish Kapoor's stainless steel sculpture <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Gate" target="_blank"><i>Cloud Gate</i></a> at Millennium Park. Its legume like shape has resulted in the nickname <i>The Bean</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTg02XzSYDk/U7gkIc4Gn5I/AAAAAAAAHh8/J9llJmsDn-0/s1600/watching.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTg02XzSYDk/U7gkIc4Gn5I/AAAAAAAAHh8/J9llJmsDn-0/s1600/watching.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
To Domo, the Bean looks a lot like the T-1000 from Terminator 2, or that NTI (non-terrestrial intelligence) probe/water creature from The Abyss. The Bean seems harmless enough now, just sitting there. Watching. Waiting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2VhkEJUfkww/U7glOZZH_lI/AAAAAAAAHiI/NBd6rjH3YpA/s1600/beanunderbelly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2VhkEJUfkww/U7glOZZH_lI/AAAAAAAAHiI/NBd6rjH3YpA/s1600/beanunderbelly.jpg" height="452" width="640" /></a></div>
Pipkin doesn't see anything ominous about the Bean. Its omphalos<i> </i>(Greek for "navel") on the underside is rather cute, in his opinion. The concave design warps and duplicates reflections around it, but at its center you can find yourself again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SAebe3JHIsI/U7gmDkoY4eI/AAAAAAAAHiQ/qbFEj8s3B5c/s1600/bellybean.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SAebe3JHIsI/U7gmDkoY4eI/AAAAAAAAHiQ/qbFEj8s3B5c/s1600/bellybean.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>

With a self-timer, you can get all sorts of fun pictures. Since Pip and Domo are small in the human world, they picked a quiet spot under the Bean for a photo where they wouldn't get trampled on.<br />
<br />
This would be a great spot for photos at dusk, when it's dark enough that the city lights come on, but light enough in the sky still to take great pictures of the city mirrored in Cloud Gate.<br />

It's the 100th Anniversary of Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. Pip and Domo aren't baseball fans, but Wrigley Field is such an iconic
part of Chicago they had to go. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jajLdc62sXc/U520hGogBuI/AAAAAAAAHhQ/xHddfranGoM/s1600/wrigleyfieldlabbit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jajLdc62sXc/U520hGogBuI/AAAAAAAAHhQ/xHddfranGoM/s1600/wrigleyfieldlabbit.jpg" height="412" width="640" /></a></div>
Flanking the historic art deco marquee sign are huge signs with 1914 and 2014 in the style of the Cubs' jersey numbers. If you've ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day
Off, you might remember the marquee said, "Save Ferris". (Ferris Bueller's Day off was John Hughes' love letter to the city of Chicago. It's a fun movie to watch.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O1qJaUXwC0k/U521OUOmdqI/AAAAAAAAHhU/_oxKOa0LYdo/s1600/bleacherappts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O1qJaUXwC0k/U521OUOmdqI/AAAAAAAAHhU/_oxKOa0LYdo/s1600/bleacherappts.jpg" height="390" width="640" /></a></div>
If you walk around the field, you'll notice many of the residential buildings have built their own bleachers on the roof. In the past, people would have cookouts and parties on the roof where they could enjoy the game for free. Now there are bleachers and people are charged for a seat. As you can imagine, this didn't go over very well with Wrigley Field, so for now, part of the profits are shared with Wrigley Field, although the seat numbers aren't included in the official seat capacity count at the field.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--RIh1sN-6Q4/U52169vMgSI/AAAAAAAAHhc/aiLwKZJ2x-g/s1600/flagtees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--RIh1sN-6Q4/U52169vMgSI/AAAAAAAAHhc/aiLwKZJ2x-g/s1600/flagtees.jpg" height="414" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Even though Pip's not a baseball fan, he appreciated this detail on the left field foulpole (he knows enough to know it's left field. How about that?) The flags are the retired numbers of Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Ferguson Jenkins. Pipkin's a little sentimental and tender hearted, and this (and the right field foulpole honoring Billy Williams and Ryne Sandberg) is his favorite feature of the park. <br />

After Pipkin saw all the Dr. Seuss sculptures at Water Tower Place, he crossed the street to check out the old looking building nestled between all the modern glass and steel skyscrapers. He learned that it's the Historic Water Tower, built in 1869 for Chicago's municipal water system. The tower used to house a water pipe that regulated water pressure. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B8BLMgB1eQs/U4y9vB8gr_I/AAAAAAAAHe4/5wLoPllf9-U/s1600/watertower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B8BLMgB1eQs/U4y9vB8gr_I/AAAAAAAAHe4/5wLoPllf9-U/s1600/watertower.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
The water tower survived the 1871 fire that leveled most of Chicago, and today is an art gallery showcasing the work of local artists and photographers, and it's free to the public.<br />
<br />
Pipkin made another fun discovery when he crossed the street. While he was looking up at the tower, he noticed this flag:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rcosKdHozps/U4y-fBgDTPI/AAAAAAAAHfA/9OJCcaQn-4o/s1600/goreysign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rcosKdHozps/U4y-fBgDTPI/AAAAAAAAHfA/9OJCcaQn-4o/s1600/goreysign.jpg" height="438" width="640" /></a></div>
An Edward Gorey exhibit!? Edward Gorey is mostly associated with Cape Cod, where he spent the latter part of his life in the <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2013/05/the-home-of-edward-gorey.html" target="_blank">Elephant House</a>. But what many forget, is that Gorey grew up and went to art school in Chicago. Visiting an Edward Gorey exhibit in his hometown just makes sense.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FtMQWZ9Ukgs/U4y_NCxXCeI/AAAAAAAAHfI/rgXABKM1dew/s1600/goreysign2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FtMQWZ9Ukgs/U4y_NCxXCeI/AAAAAAAAHfI/rgXABKM1dew/s1600/goreysign2.jpg" height="640" width="426" /></a></div>
Pipkin had no idea there was going to be an exhibit while he was in Chicago. Glee! And it just so happens that the <a href="http://www.luc.edu/luma/exhibitions/upcomingexhibitions/elegantenigmastheartofedwardgoreyandgisforgorey-cisforchicagothecollectionofthomasmichalak/" target="_blank">Loyola University Museum of Art</a> is free on Tuesdays. Pipkin was happy to be so lucky.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A part of the exhibit was <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2012/12/labbits-like-culture-art-of-edward-gorey.html" target="_blank"><i>Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey</i></a>, which Pipkin had already seen a couple years ago when the exhibit was in Portland, ME. He was happy to see the exhibit again, along with Thomas Michalak's collection of Gorey's letters and illustrations for other authors and magazines. Photography wasn't allowed inside the gallery, but the exhibit runs until June 15 2014, so if you're in Chicago, you can still see it!<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UAcNXGI1eCM/U4yKoSLDL1I/AAAAAAAAHb8/9-NwPSoOggk/s1600/fountain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UAcNXGI1eCM/U4yKoSLDL1I/AAAAAAAAHb8/9-NwPSoOggk/s1600/fountain.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
There's a place where you won't often find Pipkin - the Mall. Pipkin made an exception on his recent trip to Chicago, because at the Water Tower Place on the Magnificent Mile (magnificent for the amounts of money people spend there) there was a short exhibit of some of Dr. Seuss' bronze sculptures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9r6_GNozii0/U4yLLeR3mLI/AAAAAAAAHcE/oBWGa8_7uO4/s1600/labbit_catinthehat1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9r6_GNozii0/U4yLLeR3mLI/AAAAAAAAHcE/oBWGa8_7uO4/s1600/labbit_catinthehat1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hT3L2vwl1iE/U4yLMe-CN2I/AAAAAAAAHcM/a18AxCwrkOc/s1600/labbit_catinthehat2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hT3L2vwl1iE/U4yLMe-CN2I/AAAAAAAAHcM/a18AxCwrkOc/s1600/labbit_catinthehat2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Scattered throughout the mall were six bronze sculptures of characters from Dr. Seuss' books. The first one Pipkin found was The Cat in the Hat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MnzMazGquBs/U4yL4-hft7I/AAAAAAAAHcY/2oBKzevQldc/s1600/grinchface.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MnzMazGquBs/U4yL4-hft7I/AAAAAAAAHcY/2oBKzevQldc/s1600/grinchface.jpg" height="400" width="331" /></a></div>
<br />
Who can forget this face? You were scared about missing Christmas as a kid, weren't you?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Unless we care for the trees, it'll just be malls, everywhere!<br />

<br />
Horton hears who? Not Pipkin. Pipkin's totally being ignored.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Pip's hanging with Yertle, the Top Turtle (for now). From up here Pipkin's thinking, "Wow, it really is turtles all the way down."<br />

Sam offered up some Green Eggs and Ham but they turned Pipkin's stomach. He's not a meat eater anyway. He'd rather be eating at <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2014/05/do-rite-alright.html" target="_blank">Do-Rite</a>!<br />
<br />
The sculptures were only on display until May 5th, 2014 (which is when Pipkin saw them) but if you're in the Chicago area and you're in the Water Tower Place mall, you can visit <a href="http://drseussgallery.com/" target="_blank">The Art of Dr. Seuss Gallery</a> on the second floor. The Grand (re)Opening Celebration of the gallery happens this Father's Day Weekend, Saturday June 14, 2014 from 11 AM - 3 PM. The small gallery is packed with illustrations, sculptures, sketches and lots of unpublished work from Theodore Geisel AKA Dr. Seuss. If you're a fan of his work, it's not to be missed.<br />

Back in the Prohibition Era, Chicago was home to many illegal speakeasies. John Barleycorn in Lincoln Park was a well known speakeasy regularly frequented by notorious bank robber John Dillinger.<br />

Today, John Barleycorn's decorative door is surrounded by security cameras and door buzzers. Back in the 1920s and early 1930s, this door was boarded up, and John Barleycorn was disguised as a Chinese laundry.<br />

The sale, production, transportation and importation of alcohol was strictly prohibited, so booze was snuck in underneath piles of dirty laundry.<br />

The modern day John Barleycorn sells alcohol legally to those of drinking age, and you can find them at 658 W. Belden Ave. <br />

The Navy Pier in Chicago is quiet in early May, which is fine if you're not fond of crowds, and normally, the Navy Pier draws a big crowd. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Navy Pier puts on a fireworks show twice weekly, all synchronized to music. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KMmT-LMaDkQ/U4TPyRPBBuI/AAAAAAAAHZs/JybWcnGgq3k/s1600/labbitlighthouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KMmT-LMaDkQ/U4TPyRPBBuI/AAAAAAAAHZs/JybWcnGgq3k/s1600/labbitlighthouse.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>

The pier extends nearly a full mile out into Lake Michigan. If you walk past the pier rides (including a replica of the world’s first Ferris wheel at Chicago’s 1893 World Columbian Exposition), shops, food, museums, fun house and theatre, you'll get to the end of the pier where you'll be rewarded with a nice view of the Chicago skyline. You can also look out over Lake Michigan to see the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pt21bor65MY/U4TRMfvCD5I/AAAAAAAAHaA/xj_SpjtTK3A/s1600/domohotdogchicago.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pt21bor65MY/U4TRMfvCD5I/AAAAAAAAHaA/xj_SpjtTK3A/s1600/domohotdogchicago.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The pier's the perfect place to indulge in a hot dog, but there's just one rule: no ketchup. A real Chicago style hotdog is said to be "dragged through the garden" - an all beef dog on a poppyseed bun, with yellow mustard and condiments like tomato slices, chopped onions, dill pickle spears, and maybe lettuce or cucumber slices. Pipkin ate all the greens off of the hotdog, leaving Domo with just the hotdog and mustard - "the important parts" in Domo's opinion. It's nice when vegetarians and meat-eaters can get along.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zOfyab-2Zog/U4TSqZZbbRI/AAAAAAAAHaM/LLZPiR29jBc/s1600/rockinghorse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zOfyab-2Zog/U4TSqZZbbRI/AAAAAAAAHaM/LLZPiR29jBc/s1600/rockinghorse.jpg" height="440" width="640" /></a></div>
Pipkin found this giant rocking horse in a covered storage area at the end of the pier. If you've read Margery Williams' <i>Velveteen Rabbit</i>, you'll understand why this sight left Pipkin feeling a little sad. This horse is so handsome! He should be out where people can ride him! Domo assured both the horse and Pipkin, that the horse would be out on the pier when the weather got better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GeSa90SSHZo/U4TT4hSYpRI/AAAAAAAAHaY/9cw5ax0RXPY/s1600/sunsetpier.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GeSa90SSHZo/U4TT4hSYpRI/AAAAAAAAHaY/9cw5ax0RXPY/s1600/sunsetpier.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
And with that thought, Pipkin watched the sun go down, hoping for warmer days.yearofthelabbithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10293753007163650394noreply@blogger.com1Navy Pier Chicago, Chicago, IL 60654, USA41.8929153 -87.63591250000001816.3708808 -128.94450650000002 67.4149498 -46.327318500000018tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7990007883560569829.post-17657739523952577592014-05-26T23:12:00.003-04:002014-05-29T16:44:27.583-04:00Do-Rite? Pipkin and Domo don't normally indulge in donuts, but when they do, they head to the best donut shop wherever they happen to be traveling. This giant donut!<br />
<br />
Do-Rite Donuts makes their <a href="http://doritedonuts.com/#!donuts" target="_blank">donuts</a> fresh every morning, in small batches of no more than 36, with vegan and gluten free options, and daily specials. Officially they're open until 2 PM or whenever they run out, and believe me, if you don't get there early, you might miss out on your favorite donut!<br />

<br />
For busy bees in the Loop, Do-Rite Donuts has curbside service (since there's not space for a drive-thru in downtown Chicago). Call ahead with your order and they bring your order out to you when you get there! Sweetness!<br />

A visit to Chicago wouldn't be complete without a night at <a href="http://www.secondcity.com/" target="_blank">The Second City</a>, the comedy club/improv school that's famous for alumni like Tina Fey, Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Jane Lynch...<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_City#Resident_Stage_Alumni" target="_blank">the list</a> goes on and on!<br />
<br />
The Second City is in its 50th year, with several shows every day of the week. Pip and Domo saw the hilarious sketch comedy show <a href="http://www.secondcity.com/performances/detail/2086/" target="_blank">Depraved New World</a>, which takes you inside the minds of people and what they're <i>really</i> thinking. There was a lot of amazing talent on stage. They can't wait to see more from <a href="http://tawnynewsome.com/about-me/" target="_blank">Tawny Newsome</a>.<br />

In <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2014/05/103.html" target="_blank">the last post</a>, Pipkin and Domo were at the observation deck on the 103rd floor of the <a href="http://www.willistower.com/" target="_blank">Willis Tower</a>. From there, they could see Chicago in all directions. Looking west, they saw this:<br />

It's Lake Michigan and the waterfront parks. Just beyond the red CNA building is a partial view of Buckingham Fountain. The photo at the top of this post is a view in reverse! Pip's at the fountain, with the red CNA building, and the tall, black, bundled tower structure in the back is the Willis Tower.<br />

<a href="http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks/clarence-f-buckingham-memorial-fountain/" target="_blank">Buckingham Fountain</a> is one of the world's largest fountains, built in the late Baroque "Rococo Wedding Cake" style. It reminds Pipkin of the fountain at the Palace of Versailles.<br />
<br />
Located in Grant Park, the fountain operates from mid-April to mid-October, from 08:00 to 23:00. On the hour, the fountain's peak will shoot water to a height of 150 feet (46 metres). In the evenings, the water show is choreographed to music and lights.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Domo and Pipkin didn't have time to visit the park again at night, but if you can manage it, visit at dusk to see it during the day and at night when the lights come on in the city. It is incredibly pretty!<br />

Guess where Pipkin's posing?? 103 is the first clue!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ovOoOMkzxUo/U4EB6Mv3X6I/AAAAAAAAHWM/dKeiW0rUEwU/s1600/labbitwillis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ovOoOMkzxUo/U4EB6Mv3X6I/AAAAAAAAHWM/dKeiW0rUEwU/s1600/labbitwillis.jpg" height="384" width="640" /></a></div>
Here's the second clue. Pipkin's looking to the north.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Eu4RG2JEZwo/U4ECN7G5QEI/AAAAAAAAHWc/6ECIgbxBDFY/s1600/southside.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Eu4RG2JEZwo/U4ECN7G5QEI/AAAAAAAAHWc/6ECIgbxBDFY/s1600/southside.jpg" height="452" width="640" /></a></div>
And now Pipkin and Domo are checking out the southside.<br />
<br />

Recognize it yet?<br />
<br />
They're at the <a href="http://theskydeck.com/" target="_blank">observation deck on the 103rd floor</a> of the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois! In the photo above, they're in the glass box known as <a href="http://theskydeck.com/the-tower/facts-about-the-ledge/" target="_blank">the Ledge</a>, which stands 1,353 feet up, and 4.3 feet out from the building.<br />

<br />
Clearly, Pipkin and Domo have no problem with heights.<br />

It was a beautiful day when they went up the Willis Tower, so they got amazing 360 degree views of Chicago. They can't wait to explore more of the city. So far, they've found Chicagoans to be polite, friendly, and the city is very clean.<br />
<br />
Pipkin's favorite thing about Chicago so far is the waterfront, more specifically, the public's access to the waterfront. What you see above is Lake Michigan, and all that green space downtown along the waterfront is a series of gardens and parks, all free to the public. Look at all those baseball diamonds! It so easily could have been high priced waterfront real estate, but instead, the City of Chicago has beautiful green space for everyone to enjoy.<br />
<br />
Just behind the red <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNA_Center" target="_blank">CNA Center</a> building is Buckingham Fountain, one of the largest fountains in the world. Pipkin and Domo are headed there soon, so you'll get a closer look. You can also see the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Adler Planetarium jutting out into Monroe Harbor. Click on any of the photos above for a larger picture.<br />
<br />
Keep coming back to the blog to see more of their adventures. Chicago!<br />

There was a loud knock on the door early the other morning. The house kitty went to the door but no one was there. Just this box, with high-pitched peeping noises inside.<br />
<br />
The last time the <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2012/01/mystery-guest.html" target="_blank">warren received a box</a> at the door, the box had warnings on it. This one simply said, "Chick transport box". The cat opened the box and inside...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wa0pWBnuzjQ/U4Dq5z9jNvI/AAAAAAAAHUs/g-An1F-JGmE/s1600/catchicks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wa0pWBnuzjQ/U4Dq5z9jNvI/AAAAAAAAHUs/g-An1F-JGmE/s1600/catchicks.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
...were three little chicks! Kitty took the chicks to Chief Labbit Uncle Warren, who knew exactly what to do with them. He set them up with all the things three baby chicks need to grow into strong laying hens.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ngF3wUqGYe8/U4DsVpe1dyI/AAAAAAAAHU8/D6VzMtU565k/s1600/warrenchicks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ngF3wUqGYe8/U4DsVpe1dyI/AAAAAAAAHU8/D6VzMtU565k/s1600/warrenchicks.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
At the bottom of a large plastic bin which he purposed as a brooder, he laid down clean, fresh pine shavings for bedding. In one corner, he put chicken feed into a feeder, and into the other corner he would put in a waterer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bxhwze37v6o/U4DuB4ahenI/AAAAAAAAHVE/DvtNprzWEGg/s1600/brooder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bxhwze37v6o/U4DuB4ahenI/AAAAAAAAHVE/DvtNprzWEGg/s1600/brooder.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
On top of the brooder, Warren placed a work light with a warming bulb so the chicks can stay warm. They need temperatures of about 90°F while they're at this young, growing stage. Warren also placed a screen of chicken wire over the brooder so the chicks couldn't fly away. You might think of chickens as poor fliers, but at this age, their wings grow quickly and their bodies are still small, so they are quite excellent fliers. If you're not watching, they'll fly the coop!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Baby chicks are easy to care for, even a cat can do it. (The warren's cat respects all animals and has no hunting urge. Don't worry, she never tried to attack the chicks.) For the most part, chicks need to stay in their brooder, but on a really nice, warm day, they can go outside, as long as they are supervised.<br />
<br />
Hawks, eagles, turkey vultures, neighborhood cats and dogs - all of these are potentially dangerous to baby chicks. It's not safe to leave them unattended and defenseless, so Uncle Warren and Patrick took up guard duty to ensure their safety.<br />
<br />

Willow, Francine and Martha are quite happy at the warren and get along well. Willow's the smallest, and she's happy to be friends with everyone. She follows everyone around, but mostly she is Francine's best friend. Francine is the smartest, most adventurous and most curious of the bunch. She's the first to roost, the first to fly, and the one who leads the chicks on explorations of the lawn. Martha's the biggest of the bunch, and she's very active and asserts her size and power. She likes to kick up the bedding, run around fluffing up her wings and lead the chicks at chow time. They're a good group.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Ted and Clover had just one more day in New Orleans so they spent it together in the French Quarter. They started out with a giant waffle from <a href="http://www.magnoliagrillofnola.com/" target="_blank">Magnolia Grill</a>, a fantastic, lively diner on rue Decatur.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hMEzbW38yZk/U39q6ubJCbI/AAAAAAAAHS8/ez-ot0vLGu0/s1600/waffle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hMEzbW38yZk/U39q6ubJCbI/AAAAAAAAHS8/ez-ot0vLGu0/s1600/waffle.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Walking around the French Quarter is a lot of fun. It's a mix of retail, commercial and residential, so there's a lot to see. There are unique shops, lots of places to eat and drink, <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2014/05/cats-of-french-quarter.html" target="_blank">random cats</a>, and it's rich with history and architecture. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CV0UsTgSwCU/U39t55ZQ39I/AAAAAAAAHTM/U_cJzSThliE/s1600/928half.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CV0UsTgSwCU/U39t55ZQ39I/AAAAAAAAHTM/U_cJzSThliE/s1600/928half.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There's so much in the French Quarter, you have to get creative with the addresses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ipKVqN2SJ6k/U39t6DywMZI/AAAAAAAAHTQ/s7AstFMkLDE/s1600/corner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ipKVqN2SJ6k/U39t6DywMZI/AAAAAAAAHTQ/s7AstFMkLDE/s1600/corner.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYeg6ZRtpiw/U39ugM2zdXI/AAAAAAAAHTc/7wbT1TaSqv4/s1600/chairs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vYeg6ZRtpiw/U39ugM2zdXI/AAAAAAAAHTc/7wbT1TaSqv4/s1600/chairs.jpg" height="394" width="640" /></a></div>
A lot of the balconies in the French Quarter have plants and cozy seating, so residents can people watch from above. But the real beauty of these residences is in their courtyards, which are hidden from street view. What you see walking around the French Quarter is the <i>back</i> of people's homes. You'll have to befriend someone to see what's on the other side! It's usually something very cooling with a fountain and filled with plants for shade, like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HFzf7kFBG80/U39vGAeb9kI/AAAAAAAAHTs/9731OkcVsEE/s1600/courtyard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HFzf7kFBG80/U39vGAeb9kI/AAAAAAAAHTs/9731OkcVsEE/s1600/courtyard.jpg" height="452" width="640" /></a>Ted and Clover walked from Magnolia Grill down to Woldenberg Park, which runs along the muddy Mississippi River. </div>

At the east end of the park you can find your way to the French Market for fresh produce, food, books, clothing, local arts and crafts...pretty much anything a vendor wants to bring to the market.</div>

If you're interested in learning more about the French Quarter, you should take a guided tour in one of the horse drawn carriages at the south end of St. Louis Park. Ted's Uncle Rick and bride Lisa treated them to a romantic evening tour. It's a great time to do a tour when the streets are quieter but the parties on Bourbon St. aren't yet in full swing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VvuMHIc7S80/U39xbIBaf3I/AAAAAAAAHUM/e2GWvnzLXIM/s1600/stlouispark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VvuMHIc7S80/U39xbIBaf3I/AAAAAAAAHUM/e2GWvnzLXIM/s1600/stlouispark.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
If you visit St. Louis park early in the morning or late in the evening, you'll find many a psychic, tarot card reader and voodoo practitioner set up in the park. Just another fun thing to do in the French Quarter.<br />
<br />
Ted and Clover would like to thank Lisa & Rick again for the invite to their <a href="http://www.yearofthelabbit.com/2013/07/congratulations-lisa-rick.html" target="_blank">beautiful wedding ceremony</a> in New Orleans. Ted was so happy to re-visit his hometown, and spending time with family and friends in New Orleans is something he will always remember and treasure. There's so much to see and do in New Orleans...they're looking forward to the reunion. ;)<br />

These two cats were shop cats inside <a href="http://www.customragrugs.com/index.html" target="_blank">Louisiana Loom Works</a>, a custom hand-weaving rug workshop on Chartres St. What cat wouldn't love to live in a loom shop? Just think of all those cozy rugs and all those balls of thread! It's hard to believe the shop wasn't in ruins. ...but you kinda have to do it.<br />
<br />
Because beignets!!<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PdbYJMkby10/U31Gs96sAFI/AAAAAAAAHQg/H1OxiSciXs4/s1600/datdog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PdbYJMkby10/U31Gs96sAFI/AAAAAAAAHQg/H1OxiSciXs4/s1600/datdog2.jpg" height="410" width="640" /></a></div>
There are some things you have to eat if you're going to New Orleans. A Po-boy. Gumbo. Jambalaya. Muffuletta (must, must, must). Beignets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m6MVuBvfvVE/U31Gs1QEcVI/AAAAAAAAHQo/vTi6UDLVG1U/s1600/datdog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m6MVuBvfvVE/U31Gs1QEcVI/AAAAAAAAHQo/vTi6UDLVG1U/s1600/datdog.jpg" height="470" width="640" /></a></div>
And <a href="http://datdognola.com/" target="_blank">Dat Dog</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TLvBqjaefHE/U31GtCFQQwI/AAAAAAAAHQs/vZ7zvwvMikM/s1600/datdog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TLvBqjaefHE/U31GtCFQQwI/AAAAAAAAHQs/vZ7zvwvMikM/s1600/datdog3.jpg" height="530" width="640" /></a></div>
This is one of Ted's favorite places to eat in NOLA. If you're vegetarian like a labbit, have no fear, there is a spicy chipotle veggie dog. Otherwise, take a look at the <a href="http://datdognola.com/menu/" target="_blank">menu</a> and the specials board and don't forget the fries.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F9_q-Vcrg-Q/U31Gt2veiMI/AAAAAAAAHQ4/J6S-v6m0t9U/s1600/datdog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F9_q-Vcrg-Q/U31Gt2veiMI/AAAAAAAAHQ4/J6S-v6m0t9U/s1600/datdog4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Dat Dog is something special, and it'll put a smile on your face.<br /><br />
There are three locations now. Ted and Clover are at the original location on Freret St., but there's also one on Magazine St (uptown) and just east of the French Quarter in Faubourg Marigny.<br />
<br />
